Analyzing website traffic allows digital marketers to focus their efforts on topics that generate great results and stop wasting resources on content that visitors are not getting. Google Analytics and Google Search Console are the go-to services for tracking traffic to a personal website. However, none of these services are helpful when it comes to spying on a competitor.

Analyzing traffic from other websites helps us to redesign our content strategy and focus on what works for them. Still, to check traffic from other websites, we’ll need other third-party tools, of which we’ll cover four of the best.

1. SEMrush

SEMRush can be a useful tool for traffic analysis for digital marketers around the world. It provides data on organic and paid search traffic, distribution of traffic by country, and time period (1M, 6M, 1Y, 2Y, and all time).

The Traffic Analysis tab gives you an analysis of unique visitors per month, how much time each user spends on average, and what percentage of those users bounce back. You can also generate reports for the website’s top pages, the number of subdomains associated with it, and the geographic distribution of visitors around the world.

SEMRush also allows you to do bulk analysis of traffic for up to 100 domains at once, to speed up analyzing dozens of your competitors at once. In the final report, you’ll find the same data (visits, unique visitors, pages per visitor, average visit duration, and bounce rate) that you see in the Domain Overview tab when analyzing a single domain.

The biological research section helps you in competitor analysis. You can see a breakdown of the top organic keywords that drive the most traffic to your competitors, the intent behind the ranking keywords, and how positioned the website is in various SERP features such as featured snippets, image packs, and more.

In addition, SEMRush gives you an overview of your competitors’ top-ranking pages, which can help you change or plan your content strategy. As an SEO ranking booster, SEMRush can also be useful for identifying and rejecting toxic backlinks.

2. SimilarWeb

SimilarWeb gives you a brief overview of total visits, bounce rate, pages per visit, and average time spent by visitors on the analyzed website. If you have the Premium plan, you can view the website’s traffic report in the Traffic and Engagement section for the last three or six months or three years.

Additionally, you can analyze website traffic analysis in different countries and locations. After that, a dedicated Audience Interest section gives an overview of the major categories for which this website ranks, a list of similarly visited websites, and the top topics the website deals with.

Furthermore, unlike other traffic analysis tools that only show organic traffic data, SimilarWeb allows you to see the distribution of total traffic across different marketing channels, such as direct traffic, social traffic, referrals, and more. It also filters out top-ranking keywords, top referrals that drive in traffic, and how much traffic is coming from social networking platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, etc.

The free version of SimilarWeb is suitable for basic traffic analysis, but if you want to do more technical analysis for a few years, use its premium version. However, note that SimilarWeb does not show traffic data for sites receiving less than 50,000 visits per month.

3. Ahrefs

Ahrefs is mainly used for backlink analysis. However, it can also be helpful when analyzing the traffic of a website. The Ahrefs Site Explorer tab gives you a brief description of your website’s organic keywords and organic traffic just by entering its URL. Below that, you can see organic and paid traffic trends for one month, one year, and for all time periods.

You can also see what organic keywords the website is ranking for, the amount of traffic each keyword is driving, and where that keyword ranks in the SERPs. You can filter keywords based on their traffic and other metrics, such as their volume, position, and more. Similar to keywords, you can also track your competitors’ top-ranking pages and filter them based on traffic.

Using the Content Lag tool, you can determine which pages or keywords your competitors are getting traffic from, but your website is not ranking. The goal is to fill those gaps so that they have a good chance of ranking.
